This place is amazing! I expected a few paintings of cowboys and some nice western scenery. I got so much more! We took the guided tour (Jolan was incredible!) and it is highly recommended. Our docent knew so much and was so excited to share it with us. She was happy to answer all our questions and was intrigued when we saw something that helped her see something new in a piece. The art spans more than a century, is comprised of a myriad of styles and topics, and is hung in a beautiful space. This was an unexpected find in the heart of Denver!

I’ve lived in the downtown Denver location for 12 years, and have never been to this museum. After my recent visit, I already want to go back. This museum is located inside the Navarre building, which was built in 1880. At one time this building was a brothel. Not only is the artwork stunningly beautiful, the building itself is a work of art. The western artwork in this museum is so compelling and expressive that it’s almost an emotional experience. I love that they have brilliantly utilized the space in this building, restoring the front half of the building, back to its Victorian roots. It’s simply breathtaking.

We took the guided tour. Our docent, besides being knowledgeable and excited about the artwork (spanning more than two centuries), encouraged us to engage in back-and-forth with her. She enabled us to see jewels in the paintings that we would otherwise have missed.

The best western museum I’ve visited. Wonderful artifacts, exhibits, and explanations. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy this great place. You can easily spend 4-5 hours, if not more, being entertained with so much to see. One fantastic exhibit is the gun collection. You’ll find many exhibits that are mesmerizing. A real gem!
